Unique Drystone Garden Feature Wall in Angus

We were recently commissioned to built a drystone feature for a clients garden in Angus. Projects like this are always exciting as there is an opportunity to add a little extra artistic flair to our work. We were also very lucky to be working with clients who were happy to give us some creative freedom and were excited to see the final result.

We recently rescued a York Stone wall that was to be torn down, and we thought this recycled stone would be perfect for this project. This is one of the huge benefits of using stone for your garden projects, it is almost infinitely recyclable.

Working amongst the beautiful Angus countryside was a real pleasure, especially as we were blessed with good weather for almost the entirety of our build.

The feature was a curved wall, 3.5 metres long, one end sitting at 1.2 metres and the other at 1m tall. York Stone is a lovely stone to work with but requires a fair amount of careful shaping to ensure it sits tight and level in the wall. You can see our handmade banker, that we use as a surface on which to shape stones, in the image below.

We decided to include a niche in the structure as an added area of visual interest. We found two beautiful feature stones for the top and bottom surfaces of the nuche and settled on a vertical stone backing which we felt was a unique design element that the clients would really appreciate. You can see the beautiful tonal differences in the stone in the image above. The niche is 30cm high and 20cm wide, offering a really functional space within the structure. This feature is set against the backdrop of the Angus hills and we created an undulating cope line to mirror the lines of the hills behind it.

We are incredibly happy with the final piece, as are our clients. Projects like this are very satisfying to work on, and it was definitely fun to be flexing our creative muscles.
